2. Something positive that happened in the story was that Sofia tried to make things right with her father. After she ran off to Europe to get married and then had a kid, her relationship with Carlos was strained and tainted. They didn't talk to each other and there was a ton of tension between to two. After Sofia had her second child though, things got a little better. Due to this, Sofia really wanted t fix things so she decided to have her father's 70th birthday party at her house at as a big celebration with the whole family. She spent a lot of time on the part arrangements and wanted everything to be perfect. Although the party didn't turn out as a huge success and did not go as planned, I still think it was something positive because Sofia tried to make things right with Carlos and reached out to him. I would consider this a person to person and a person to self positivity because she needed to do this to be at peace with herself and her father. This can be looked at as a positive because of the love shown by Sofia and how she did this herself and acted as the bigger person.
3. Linsanity once again! I am 100% on the Jeremy Lin bandwagon and I love the whole story about him and think he is a great player. His story is great for the NBA and the fact that he is an Asian-American makes it even better, showing that Asians can play in the NBA at a high level. The issue about race with Lin and the issues in the Garcia Girls is like the same thing. They deal with similar problems like the teasing that the girls recieve in the story and how Lin is percieved in the NBA as an Asian. A recent headline came of using a racial slur about Jeremy Lin and there was a controversy about all of that, which is like the ridicule and harrassment the Garcia girls recieve. But, Lin didn't let it bother him and the girls in the book didn't let it effect them that much either. All in all, Jeremy Lin is a boos and he is changing the game of basketball one game at a time. How we look at our own identity today varies from person to person and how other people look at you depends on your race a lot of time which isn't always fair but it is how our society works these days.
I agree with your commentary on Yolanda's identidy throughout the story, I too think that her identidy was shaped in the Rudy Elmenhurst story. I also agree that Sofia's party was a positive because she did somewhat repair her relationship with her father, even though Carlos left the party angry over what happened during the "kiss" game. Overall, I agree with what you had to say about questions on identidy.
ReplyDeleteHi Mike. I definitely agree with you when you talk about Sofia coming home to make things right with her father as being positive. She betrayed her father before, and disappointed him by leaving for a man. I thought it was a good thing that she came back and made it up to her father. She named her child after her father and had a baby shower for her first daughter exactly how her father would have liked it. She made up for the past, and I thought that was courageous of her. She felt like she needed to improve the relationship between them. Also, I mean I am not that obsessed with Jeremy Lin as you are, but I agree with what you are saying. I think it's good for him. It's a good Cinderella story. I do not know if it will last for a while, but he got his 15 minutes of fame, and will not be forgotten. He made a name for himself and for Asians who have been looked upon as people who aren't usually thought of to be the athletic types. So, good for him.
ReplyDeleteMike, as usual your response is very amusing and easily agreeable. I also believe that Yolanda did have a monumental life changing event when she dealt with Rudy. This experience did teach Yolonda a harsh reality of America about trust. She used her new knowledge about being able to trust people and also about sex to help shape the rest of her life. Also Lin is definitely a huge icon for his culture. His situation is extraordinary, but somewhat comparable to the Garcia girls as you pointed out. Again, great response! Keep it up.
DeleteHey Mike, excellent post here, as usual. I always enjoy reading a nice new post from the great Nini. I really liked some of the points that you made. Firstly, I agree with you about the book shaping Yolanda. I actually wrote about that myself, kind of ironic if you must. I think her identity has been greatly shaped due to these events, more than that of the other characters. Secondly, I agree with you on how Sofia's conflict can be seen in a positive manner. I also touched on that subject and i think that all though it seemed bad at first, some positives ended up coming out of it. And finally, I am so on the Linsanity bandwagon it isn't even funny. I think it is so inspirational for not only asians, but also any other underdog out there. Keep up the nice posts!
